Learning is easier if it is fun and to make it fun we need to provide children with a playful environment. The more fun the environment, the more a child will want to stay with it. We know children learn in a variety of ways but we all recognize that play is an important vehicle in the process. Children learn a second language in a natural way, through play, songs, rhymes, movement, exploration, creativity, games, story books and fun activities in an environment that is playful. When exposing children to a new language use the language at all times paired

Thanksgiving is almost here!

Let’s start celebrating! There is a magic flare that surrounds our homes and brings joy to many in different parts of the world. Everyone seems focused on family traditions and “fiestas”. In only a week many of us will celebrate “Thanksgiving Day.” In the International Schools I used to work for, we celebrated Thanksgiving with a fabulous lunch with parents and children together at the table. Babies and parents can learn Spanish together

Babies and parents can learn a new language together! Parents are the most important people in a child’s life. From the time they are born children learn most from their parents and/or caregivers, and it is in their company that they feel more comfortable. It is the months from conception to the child’s third birthday that are pivotal to optimal brain development, and that’s before he/she even enters pre-K. I believe that the earlier we begin exposing children to a new language the better it is. The NEW Languages4kidz Español para Bebes (Spanish for Babies) and Español para Pequeñines (Spanish for Toddlers) in

An inviting atmosphere for dual language learners

For many of our dual language learners the classroom is the focal point of their English/Spanish exposure. It is the base of where, when, why and how they speak English or Spanish. That’s why the physical appearance of the classroom in itself is so important. We recommend teachers to try to give the impression to little ones that they are making a visit abroad each time they enter the classroom. Not only is their visit there a chance to listen to and speak the target language, it should also be an exciting cultural dip into a foreign setting and international atmosphere. How

Celebrate March!!!

March is on its way and I would like to point out a few things about these 5 celebrations that get my attention: The National Association for Music Education has chosen the month of March to be the time of year to focus on music education in schools all across the United States. This is great but let’s not forget to put a special focus on the importance of using music in schools all year long. May music surround our children for it can go beyond language, beyond social structure, beyond a previously seen possibility. Music, poetry, and the

Do you believe every child is a genius?

Do you believe every child is a genius?  I do. I believe that children are born with wonder, curiosity, awe, spontaneity, vitality, flexibility, and many other characteristics of a joyous being which are particular characteristics of being a genius. Young children master a complex symbol system (their own native language) without any formal instructions and they are capable of learning a second or third language early in life easily. Young children have vivid imaginations, creative minds, and sensitive personalities. It is imperative that we, as educators and parents, help preserve these important characteristics of children as they grow and mature

And starting when they are newborns and not even able to talk, creates fond memories of being with the people who love them. Even the youngest babies love to be held close and hear the voice of Mom or Dad as they read a book aloud. Reading aloud to your baby creates magical

Language learning is a natural process

Children learn to talk using only the sounds and words they pick up from their environment most importantly from their parents and caregivers. Many scientists believe that a newborn’s brain is genetically “programmed” to learn language, just as a bird is programmed to sing or a spider to weave a web. No one actually teaches children to talk. Rather, parents and others enable their learning by speaking while they interact with them. Therefore, interaction is a critical part of this process. Consequently, a baby’s brain will then discard the ability to speak in languages he or she does not hear.

Open-mindedness and respect towards others is what we want young children to learn besides a new language

When teaching a foreign language it is extremely important to begin with children in their early years, when their minds are still open to “catching” differences and fitting them inside their “thinking system”. So, what is learned is not only the new language, but an open mindedness and respect towards the differences between them and others in the world. In a globalized world where we continuously come in contact with people from different cultures, it should be a common practice to learn foreign languages and to create a positive attitude towards everything that is “different” from one’s own culture. As

It is during this period that children develop a natural ability to learn. Scientists suggest that when it comes to ease of learning and proficiency in a foreign language, earlier is better. There is a “window of opportunity” for easily acquiring additional languages from the moment a child is born. Research indicates that newborns are very receptive to the distinctive sounds of foreign languages. During the first six months of life, babies babble using 70 sounds
